Kaliakra Archaeological and Nature Reserve 🧭

Cape Kaliakra is one of the most stunning and historically significant destinations on the northern Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Located on a long, narrow rocky peninsula characterized by dramatic red cliffs that plunge up to 70 meters into the sea . It is primarily a Nature and Archaeological Reserve, contrasting sharply with the sandy beach resorts nearby.

History and Ruins 🏰

The cape has been continuously inhabited since the 4th century BC. It is most famous for its medieval fortress, which was the last capital of the Despotate of Dobruja in the 14th century. Visitors can explore the extensive ruins of the defense walls (inner and outer), the remains of several ancient churches, and other structural remnants of the city . A small Archaeological Museum is located at the tip of the cape, providing context to the excavated artifacts and the history of the fortress.

Nature and Scenery 🐬

Kaliakra is a prime nature observation spot. Due to its exposure and location on the Via Pontica (a major bird migration route), it is an important area for birdwatching. It is also one of the best spots on the Bulgarian coast to sight dolphins near the shore, especially during the calmer morning hours. The scenic beauty is defined by the unique red cliffs and the vast, open views of the Black Sea.
