About This Photo

This photograph captures the essence of Obzor, a charming beach town on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Located between Byala and Sveti Vlas, Obzor offers a perfect blend of ancient history and modern seaside resort amenities. The town sits at the foot of the eastern Balkan Mountains where they meet the sea, creating a stunning natural amphitheater. The name 'Obzor' means 'view' or 'overview' in Bulgarian, referring to the spectacular panoramic vistas from the surrounding hills.

About Obzor

Obzor (ancient Heliopolis - 'City of the Sun') is a small coastal town with approximately 2,000 permanent residents, swelling to 15,000-20,000 during summer peak season. The beach stretches for over 6 kilometers - one of the longest uninterrupted sandy beaches in Bulgaria, with fine golden sand and gradually deepening water ideal for families. The town has a rich history dating back to Thracian times, later becoming a Roman and Byzantine settlement. Today it offers a more peaceful alternative to mega-resorts like Sunny Beach, with good infrastructure, numerous hotels and restaurants, yet maintaining a more authentic Bulgarian atmosphere. The surrounding Stara Planina mountains provide opportunities for hiking and nature exploration.
