About Shabla

Shabla is a destination on the northernmost point of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, close to the border with Romania. It is famous for its Shabla Lighthouse and the nearby Shabla and Durankulak Lakes, which are wetlands of international importance and significant stopovers along the Via Pontica bird migration route. This destination features wide, uncrowded sandy beaches, a rural and authentic atmosphere, and offers excellent value, making it ideal for budget travelers, families, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking quiet, peaceful relaxation.

What to Expect

The beach area at Shabla is notable for its vast, expansive size and fine to medium sand, providing plenty of free space even during peak season. Due to its location on the northern coast, the area is generally breezy. Simple, budget-friendly accommodations (like bungalows) are available directly near the beach. During summer months (June-September), water temperatures range from 22-25°C (72-77°F). Amenities are more limited and rustic compared to major resorts, contributing to its authentic feel.

Getting There & Practical Information

The nearest major airport is Varna (VAR), located about 90 km south. Shabla is best reached by car, as public bus services are less frequent than in the south. It is situated off the main coastal road (E87). Accommodation often consists of private guesthouses, simple hotels, and beach bungalows, offering some of the best value on the coast. Bulgaria uses the Bulgarian Lev (BGN), approximately 2 BGN = 1 EUR. Basic English is spoken, but knowing a few Bulgarian phrases is helpful in this less-developed area.

Nearby Attractions

The main attraction is the Shabla Lighthouse, built in 1857 and one of the oldest operational lighthouses in Europe. Visitors should also explore Shabla Lake and Durankulak Lake, which are protected areas, perfect for birdwatching, and the nearby village of Kamen Bryag with its dramatic cliffs. The general surroundings offer open fields, which, despite the threat of development, maintain a unique, wild charm.

Best Time to Visit

June and September offer excellent weather with the highest degree of tranquility and best prices. Water is warm enough for comfortable swimming from mid-June through mid-September. Early autumn is prime for birdwatching during the peak of the Via Pontica migration.

Tips for Visitors

Bring high SPF sunscreen (30+). Carry cash as smaller establishments and bungalow rentals may not accept cards. Be prepared for a rustic experience with fewer commercialized facilities than in the southern resorts. Embrace the local, quiet pace of life.
